The Make-It-Count campaign emerges from recommendations of the 2013 Fresh Voices Report by the Fresh Voices Youth Advisory Team. This report, supported through a partnership between Vancouver Foundation and B.C.’s Representative for Children and Youth, describes findings and 16 recommendations from a series of dialogues and workshops held with immigrant and refugee youth and their allies in 2011 and 2012. Some of these recommendations are found below. For more information, please download your copy of the full 28-page report.

Count ELL toward graduation.

Provide anti-oppression and anti-racism training to teachers and staff.

Ensure ELL testing, assessment, placement and academic guidance is consistent across B.C.

Include the voices of newcomers on school boards and committees.

Implement special credit programs for languages spoken at home.

Increase the number of immigrant-facilitated dialogues that focus on the school setting, and ask government officials to participate and listen to these conversations.
